Living Room Program
The Living Room model is a community crisis respite program that offers people experiencing a mild mental health crisis an alternative to hospitalization. Individuals can receive services at the Living Room for up to 23 hours.

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
988 will be a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the U.S. for 24/7 The National Suicide Prevention Line, 800-273-TALK (8255), will still be accessible. When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary. In Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, 988, instead of 211, is the best number to call for mental health crises.
About Soft Launch of 988
This 988 launch is being considered a “soft launch.” A soft launch is undertaken when an organization wants to roll out a new service gradually over time. In the case of 988, its creators want to ensure the infrastructure and staffing are in place to handle the call volume, which is expected to increase as the public becomes aware of this new resource. They also need the ability to continue work on various technical details and to address new issues as they arise. For these reasons, the messaging and advertising about 988 thus far has been somewhat limited, with more aggressive marketing planned as the system matures.
Geotagging
Of note, unlike 911, cell phone callers to 988 will be directed to a call center nearest to the area code of their phone. If you live in Miami, but have a New York City area code on your cell, you will be routed to a call center in New York. Organizers are working to address this issue.
Mobile Response Teams
The goals of Mobile Response Teams are to lessen trauma; divert individuals from emergency departments, juvenile justice or criminal justice settings; and prevent unnecessary psychiatric hospitalizations. MRTs are intended to provide on-demand crisis intervention services as needed by phone or in person at your location in which a behavioral health crisis occurs, including homes, schools, and emergency departments. Mobile response services must be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services are provided by a team of professionals and paraprofessionals trained in crisis intervention skills. In addition to helping resolve the crisis, MRTs work with individuals and families to identify resources and develop strategies for effectively dealing with potential future crises. Living Room Model
New Horizons Community Mental Health Center, Inc. has launched a “Living Room” program to serve the mental health needs of people in Miami-Dade County. This new model will be the first of its kind in South Florida. The 50-year-old agency is excited to offer this new line of service.
The Living Room model is a community crisis respite program that offers people experiencing a mild mental health crisis an alternative to hospitalization. Individuals can receive services at the Living Room for up to 23 hours. When people experience a mental health crisis, they are faced with the decision to go to the emergency department or to try to manage the crisis themselves. This provides an option of services in the crisis continuum.
Services that will be offered to Living Room guests include: screening, assessment, crisis intervention; a safe place to relax and rest; peer counselor support; professional counselor to provide de-escalation and coping skills and a safety plan; linkage and referrals to other community and mental health services; medication management; monitoring; identification of and referrals to community resources; mental wellness support list services that will be offered and how people can access services. There is no requirement for referrals, all adults meeting the Living Room criteria are eligible.
